As a student, Halloween costumes are often a pretty homemade affair; low budgets and busy schedules don't really make for the optimum combination when it comes to dressing up.
Celebrities, on the other hand, have the luxury of both money and contacts who can make even the wildest of ideas come to life for one night only. Here are a few of 2018's best:
Parker Curry
You may not have heard her name, but you've probably seen this iconic photo of little Parker Curry gazing up at Michelle Obama's portrait in the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. Well, as if meeting her idol wasn't enough, Parker decided to dress up as her for Halloween this year and the result- a miniature replica of Michelle's gown and a perfectly imitated pose- is enough to make even the scariest of monsters say "awe!".
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen
As a queen of social media and a king of the music industry, nothing less than legitimate royalty will do when it comes to costume inspiration for Chrissy Teigen and John Legend. Their take on Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip is as entertaining as it is accurate; from her hat to her shoes, and his hair to his military badges, they really haven't missed out a single detail. All they need now are a few corgis and a series on Netflix- both of which could definitely be arranged.
Joey King
After recently shaving her head in preparation for a new role, it seems Joey King has now gone one step further and sacrificed her nose in order to create the most accurate Voldemort costume ever. Given that in the USA Halloween costumes aren't necessarily scary like they are here in the UK, it's actually a nice surprise to see someone try something a little spookier- even if that something is He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner
Every year Gomez and Morticia are reincarnated by couples celebrating Halloween all over the world. I'll admit, it's been done a lot. But, with that said, the Addams Family are to Halloween what roast potatoes are to a Sunday dinner: a timeless classic that will always be welcome.
Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams
On the other end of the spectrum to the classics are the innovations, and this couple wordplay is unlike any costume we've seen before. Princess Belle? Been there, done that. A taco? Seen it all before. Taco Belle? Now we're onto something.
Lupita Nyong'o
An icon as an icon. The recent news of the Clueless remake has really divided public opinion, but one thing we can all get behind is Lupita Nyong'o's flawless interpretation of Dionne. The plaid skirt, the tiny handbag, the bedazzled mobile, and the magnificent hat are made even better by the addition of her very own Christian- one thing's certain: this look is far from ensemble-y challenged.
Missy Elliott
Imagine being so iconic that you can dress up as yourself for Halloween because that's exactly what Missy Elliott did. She recreated her own "The Rain" music video, and the result is pretty perfect- even if she couldn't find her original blow up suit.
Victoria Justice
Some of these looks have been pretty amazing, but they aren't really the kind of thing you could whip up quickly after a trip to Wilko's. Victoria Justice's ouija board costume consisting entirely of body paint, a black bandeau, and some leather trousers, however, is exactly the kind of affordable-but-effective look that can be recreated by anyone with a black eyeliner, a steady hand, and a bit of patience.
Penelope Disick and North West
As proven by Georgia’s olive costume in Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging, sometimes the best costumes are the product of some cardboard and a splash of paint. North and Penelope- straying from their characteristic glamour- have fully embraced this and seemingly give a nod to their famous family’s penchant for all things luxurious by dressing up as Fiji and Perrier water, respectively.
Heidi Klum
No Halloween roundup would be complete without Heidi Klum; she is known for her unwavering commitment to incredibly convincing and outlandish costumes. This year is no exception; with the help of some prosthetics and a lot of green paint, her Princess Fiona outfit proves that green really is the new black.
